Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)
The product of DR Plant, HBI, is increasingly used as a substitute of scrap, Pig Iron, DRI and other such ferrous raw materials.
Uses of HBI
- Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) is a premium steelmaking raw material that contains more than 90% total iron (Fe) in a nearly pure form that is used in Blast Furnace (BF), the Basic Oxygen steelmaking converter (BOF or BOS), and the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF).
- It has advantages over steel scrap due to its high bulk density of about 2.6 t/m3, and the very low content of undesirable chemical elements such as Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, Sn, and S.
- The high specific density results in a metallic structure that resists breakage
- HBI is also resistant to degradation due to the effects of weathering. No change in the chemical analysis.Only minimal loss of metallization even after long time storage.
- HBI is free flowing in bulk materials handling equipment that facilitates its shipping, storage and feeding from bins.
- Minimum risk of overheating during storage and transport. Makes the transportation much safer compared to cold DRI.
- High Thermal and Electrical conductivity
- Low reactivity with fresh and salt water.
HDRI
Jindal Shadeed Iron & Steel is the First Midrex plant to have a direct gravity of HDRI to Electric arc furnace. Hot DRI is tapped at 700*c from the shaft furnace to storage bin and to the electric arc furnace at 650*c . Major advantage of Using HDRI is reduction in power consumption & Electrode in Electric Arc Furnace.
